What is the PVA Credential? #
The NABCEP Photovoltaic Associate (PVA) is a foundational credential designed for individuals who want to demonstrate a fundamental understanding of solar photovoltaic (PV) system design, installation, sales, and maintenance. It acts as a major stepping stone for anyone starting a career in the clean energy sector or advancing toward higher-level NABCEP Board Certifications.
Who Provides the Certification? #
The credential is offered by the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP), the most widely recognized and respected national certification organization for renewable energy professionals
How to Qualify #
NABCEP provides three primary pathways to qualify to take the PVA examination:
- 1. Education Pathway: Complete an entry-level PV course through a NABCEP Associate Registered Training Provider. Most online solar courses range from 18 to 24 training hours.
- 2. Experience Pathway: Provide documentation of at least 6 months of full-time work experience in the solar/PV industry.
- 3. Entry-Level Conversion: Convert an existing, valid NABCEP Entry-Level Achievement Award into the official PVA credential.
Exam & Application Costs #
Costs vary depending on whether you take the exam directly through a training provider or independently through NABCEP:
- Exam Fee:
$125 – $150(When registered via an approved training provider or via Live Remote Proctoring). - Independent Application Fee: Up to
$375(If applying independently via the experience pathway directly through NABCEP).
Note: Most students take the exam upon completing a course with a Registered Training Provider, where the test fee is either bundled into tuition or offered at the discounted rate.
Exam Structure & Content Domains #
The PVA exam consists of 70 multiple-choice questions based on NABCEP’s Job Task Analysis (JTA). Below is the percentage breakdown across the core performance domains:
